River Conversation on the Exe at Tiverton

A great project started up last spring along Devon’s longest river:

Action on the River Exe – The Sid

Celebrating East Devon’s rivers – Festival of the Exe – The Sid

And a lot of action has been taken – and a lot of celebrating has happened since:

Friends of the River Exe aims to be a voice for the river and its tributaries by bringing together local people and groups working to protect and restore it to full health.

Friends of the River Exe was launched in 2023 in response to anger about the state of our river with a Transition Network Seedfunding grant that brought together the River Exe Transition Partnership (Sustainable TivertonTransition Exeter and Transition Exmouth).

We work in partnership, on citizen science with Westcountry Rivers Trust and Sea-Changers, and on an Oral History project to record memories of the Exe long ago with Tiverton Museum.

We build on some of the work undertaken locally by Tidelines since 2020 in the Exe, bringing creativity, science and community together to respond to the climate and nature crisis in the estuary and coast. This includes the Salmon Run project which connected communities along the river in 2022 on World Rivers Day.

About – Friends of the River Exe

There is more action and celebration happening in Tiverton this weekend, as reported by Devon Live:

River Conversation event will invite people to become River Exe heroes

Come and discover the wonders of the River Exe and its wildlife, and how you can help protect them from pollution, invasive plants, and climate change

If you love the River Exe and its amazing wildlife, you won’t want to miss the second ‘River Conversation’ event hosted by Friends of the River Exe (FORE).

After a successful first year the second ‘River Conversation’ will be held on Saturday January 27 at St George’s Extension, behind Boots the Chemist, between 3pm and 6pm.

Sally Chapman, a member of the group said: “With our rivers and wildlife at threat there is no better time to get involved in protecting and restoring activities. At this event you will hear updates of our popular campaigns involving citizen’s science water testing and progress with the ‘Parliament of the waters’.”
